I Like Free Concerts. Rock-n-Ride – Sat, 6/25 at 3pm

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

There’s no better way to celebrate the summer than with free concerts – am I right? Between the periodic happenings in Centennial Olympic Park and the ah-mazing Park Tavern Sunday evenings with beers and bands, the weather’s perfect for hearing some live music.

This Saturday, head downtown to check out some of the city’s best artists at Grady Health Foundation’s Rock-N-Ride: Atlanta staple Yacht Rock, the effervescent Pelvis Breastlies (all female Elvis cover band… no joke), Six Shot Revival (I’ve seen them, they’re decent), and more.

It’s an awesome way to spend a Saturday afternoon – check the bands out at 3pm and get a gander at all the hot rod hotties who will have just taken a motorcycle ride through the city for charity. Ladies, whether you’ll find someone you’d like to rock-n-ride is a toss-up, but your odds will be good.

Details below.

CELEBRATE ATLANTA’S FIRST RESPONDERS ON SATURDAY, JUNE 25

Grady Health Foundation’s Rock-N-Ride is a Party from Start to Finish

ATLANTA – Warm weather, music and motorcycles and a great cause all in one spot could only mean one thing: Grady Health Foundation’s “Rock‐N‐Ride” presented by AirTran Airways is right around the corner. On Saturday, June 25 motorcyclists will gather at Killer Creek Harley‐Davidson in Roswell to kick off the event that benefits Grady Health Foundation and Gold Shield Atlanta.

Ride registration begins at $40 and includes a commemorative Rock‐N‐Ride T‐shirt, a ride pin and complimentary bike parking downtown at the festival. The event starts at 11:00am with entertainment by RATL at Killer Creek Harley‐Davidson in Roswell. Kickstands up at 2:00pm and the group will head downtown for the “Party on Peachtree” – MusicFest ‐ which begins at 3:00pm.

Don’t ride? Don’t worry you can join in the fun at 3 p.m. on Peachtree Street which will be shut down between Harris Street and Ellis Street for the first time ever. You won’t need a ticket to get in, so stop by and shop at the local artist market, purchase your exclusive Rock‐N‐Ride merchandise, eat drink and be merry and do it all with a light heart knowing that a portion of the proceeds from this public event will benefit the two organizations.

In addition, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department will also be out hosting a boot drive, so make sure to bring a little extra cash and say thanks to those who put their lives on the line each day for our states resident’s. The event honors first responders from across Georgia and supports traumatic injuries treated at Grady Health System, metro Atlanta’s premier Level 1 Trauma Center. Gold Shield Foundation is dedicated to assisting surviving spouses and dependent children of law enforcement officers and firefighters inured in the line of duty.

Coolness!

West Side Story at The Fox

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

My friend Patrick is like the Ghostbusters of musical theater.  When you need a show date, “Who you gonna call? Patrick Miller!”

He didn’t disappoint when I offered up a pair of West Side Story tickets, and he agreed to serve as a guest writer for Atlanta Onstage.  Patrick has always fancied himself a song-and-dance man, but I honestly wasn’t expecting him to submit this as his blog entry:

After a long talk about “right” and “wrong” and why Atlanta Onstage isn’t his personal career launching ground, Patrick relented and wrote the following review.  Enjoy!

I did not have time to go to the theatre yesterday.

Projects were piling up at work, laundry was piling up at home, and so maybe it’s no surprise I was in crappy mood all day. “Even more reason to unplug and get away for a few hours,” I thought to myself yesterday afternoon.

And so I did. I shut down my computer and headed to the Fabulous Fox Theatre to see Broadway Across America’s touring show of West Side Story. And to ensure I’d enjoy myself, I brought my best friend Kim along for the ride… with her by my side and an adult beverage in my hand, I knew I was ready to have a good time. And let me tell you, I did!

Going into this show, all I truly knew of West Side Story came from having seen the 1961 film starring Natalie Wood. I was unprepared for how gritty, real and captivating this production of the stage show was going to be. The cast seemed to get younger while the situations simultaneously became more grown-up. For those not in the know, the musical, a loose adaptation of Romeo & Juliet set in 1950’s New York City, is about a neighborhood turf war between two groups of street punks, the White “Jets” against the Puerto Rican “Sharks”, and a pair of star-crossed lovers who get caught in the middle.

The choices made in this production of West Side Story (2009 Broadway Revival) truly bring out wonderful new facets of this beloved old show, like pulling up the carpet in a beautiful 50-year old house to find pristine hardwood floors beneath. For instance, the show has been infused with street Spanish in place of previously English lines… so unless you’re a native Spanish speaker or you aced all your high school and college Spanish courses, be prepared to be a bit in the dark for some of the dialogue. And while it took me few scenes to adjust, my lack of understanding gave me new understanding of the plight Sharks, isolated based on their language, heritage and skin color. This version also turns up the juvenile raunchiness and street toughness in the characters, lending newfound authenticity to the rather mature storyline.

These updates in the show help illuminate a major theme in West Side Story – the struggle of conformity versus division, evident in the pressure for the boys to be in gangs, the pressure for the Puerto Ricans to speak English, the pressure for the lovers in the center of all the action to instead find someone of their own race. But with all this pressure for the characters to fit in, it was surprising how many of the actors really stood out! Foremost was the show-stealing performance of Anita by Michelle Aravena, but frankly all the women in this show were top-notch (the performance of “America” made me smile inside and out). And there were really no small roles in the show either, with standout performances coming from Alexandra Frohlinger (playing Anybodys, the persistent tomboy and Jets-wannabe whose loveable characterization and solid performance of “Somewhere” were truly endearing), the hilarious Stephen DeRosa (playing Glad Hand, the well-meaning yet dubious social worker trying to coordinate a dance between the Jets and the Sharks) and the Jets ensemble in their updated version of “Gee, Officer Krupke” led by Drew Foster (playing the aptly named Action).

And while Ali Ewoldt gives a genuine and charming performance as the young love-struck Maria, her counterpart Kyle Harris struggles in his role as Tony. Though the lead actor’s overall performance is adequate, his singing and dancing fall awfully short of his top billing.

But believe me there is far more right about this show than wrong! The story is timeless. The music is unforgettable. The choreography is exceptional. The set and lighting design are stunning. And while the show is darker than before, the attentive details shine bright. I left the theatre with a smile on my face, glad I had made time for this worthwhile production.

And now it’s your turn! Grab your best friend, grab your significant other (yes, this is guy-friendly), or just grab your coat and catch a brilliant performance of West Side Story at the Fabulous Fox Theatre before it leaves town January 30th!
